The Dixie National Forest, is one of Utah’s best kept secrets! We’ll ride fantastic singletrack trails that take us through unique landscapes, around a scenic lake, and to the edge of the Virgin River Rim over-looking Zion National Park.

You’ll hike amongst the spectacular terrain in Bryce National Park and ride on a variety of tread surfaces through colorful canyons and shady forests down to the starkly beautiful remnants of a relatively recent lava flow and the head waters of the Virgin River which is responsible for carving Zion Canyon.

Tour Overview:

Our Bryce to Zion Tour offers great trails for practicing your mountain biking skills and is suitable for intermediate through advanced riders who are in good physical condition, able to ride 5 – 6 hours a day performing at altitudes between 6,500’ – 9, 500’. You’ll ride at your own speed. More accomplished riders can let it roll while recreational riders find a comfortable pace allowing for maximum enjoyment.

The days in this week are yours for riding, hiking, relaxing on a lake front, gazing at dramatic vistas, or just kicking back at camp and taking in the spectacular views. Our meals are delicious, and our Guides are seasoned experts who will help you make this the best week of riding you’ve ever had!

The Peters, OR

Day 1 – Breakfast on your own.  We’ll depart St George by van and drive to Bryce Canyon National Park where we’ll enjoy our first lunch, a great hike through the Hoodoos, and then head out for a sunset ride from camp.   (Hike 6 miles, Bike 9 miles)

Day 2 – We’ll fuel up with a hearty breakfast, make a pack lunch, and then we’ll be back in the saddle again.  Our route takes us over the infamous Thunder Mountain Trail where you’ll be challenged by the terrain and astounded with the views.     (Bike 18 miles)

Day 3 – After breakfast we’ll break camp and drive over to the western section of the Virgin River Rim Trail.  We’ll ride rolling singletrack through pine forests overlooking Zion National Park on our route to our next camp at Navajo Lake – the headwaters of the Virgin River.  (Bike 18-27 miles)

Day 4 – Awaken to a spectacular sunrise, We’ll ride more great singletrack heading east on the Virgin River Rim Trail to Cascade Falls where we’ll enjoy our pack lunch before returning to camp.  (Bike 17 mi, Hike ½ mi)

Day 5 – We’ll drive through Zion before returning to St George by 6pm.  You’ll have plenty time for a short hike in the Zion Narrows, or to check out the Visitors Center.

IS THIS TRIP FOR YOU?

DO I NEED PREVIOUS MOUNTAIN BIKE EXPERIENCE?  Yes.  Some mountain biking experience is necessary to enjoy this tour.  This trip is suitable for a fit  intermediate to advanced mountain biker.  Learning to safely handle a mountain bike on single track is not difficult.  We will give a complete orientation prior to the start of the ride.  All of our guides are experienced riders and great MTB Instructors.  Daily, we will discuss and demonstrate cycling techniques and safe riding skills to help improve your ability on the mountain bike.

HOW MANY MILES PER DAY?  On this 5-day trip we ride 6-27 miles per day.  Mountain biking moves at a slower pace compared to road riding.  A rough rule of thumb is to double the number of mountain biking miles when comparing MTB to road riding (10 miles on a mountain bike feels like 20 on the road).  Extra riding and hiking is always available from each camp for those who wish to extend their day.  This trip also involves hiking on steep trails with loose terrain.

WHAT KIND OF SHAPE DO I NEED TO BE IN?  Mountain biking is a wonderful, healthy sport that attracts people of all ages and walks of life.  It can be as strenuous or mellow as you make it; it all comes down to being in good general health, being accustomed to regular exercise and controlling your pace.  If you can ride at a comfortable pace for 4-6 hours at home you will do fine on the trip.  Remember, it is possible to ride a mountain bike for fun and it doesn’t have to be a race.  Everyone rides at their own pace so there is plenty of time for photos and relaxing.

WILL I NOTICE THE ALTITUDE?  Our routes in the Bryce and Zion areas lie between 6500′ and 9500′ above sea level.  If you live near sea level you will feel a difference, and everyone adjusts at different rates.  The quickest way to acclimate to the altitude and dry air is to make an extra effort to drink plenty of water and eat salty foods when you first arrive and throughout the day during the trip.  It’s dry in the southwest, so drink and snack frequently.

Food

HOW IS THE FOOD? We prepare healthy & hearty delicious meals!  Our outstanding menu reflects the nutritional needs that mountain biking and outdoor living requires.  Our meals are prepared using regionally sourced Organic Ingredients; lean meats, fresh fruits & veggies, and whole grains as well as enough sweet treats to satisfy!

We also bring snack bars & electrolyte replacement mix.  Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegetarian or other dietary requirements & requests can be accommodated with advance notice.

WHAT ABOUT BEVERAGES?We provide Orange Juice, Fresh Moab Coffee, Black & Herbal Teas, Vitalyte (an electrolyte replacement mix) and plenty of yummy water.  If you want to bring beer, soft drinks or extra juice, we request you bring aluminum cans or plastic containers only!  We typically have room for four beverages per person, per day, in our cooler.  Please transfer wines & spirits from glass bottles to a plastic or metal bottle with a tight fitting screw cap lid.

Destination Location

HOW DO I GET TO THE LEXINGTON HOTEL IN ST GEORGE, UTAH?  From the Las Vegas Airport catch a ride with St George Shuttle for $62 round-trip OR if driving take Interstate 15 North to St George, UT (approx 2 hours).  Exit at S. Bluff St off Interstate 15.  The Lexington Hotel is right across the street from K-Mart; tell the staff that you’re with Magpie Cycling to get a discount on a room.  Please be aware that there is a time difference between Nevada & Utah.  When you cross the state line you’ll set your watch ONE HOUR LATER.

Transportation

CAN I BRING MY OWN BIKE AND HOW DO I SHIP IT?  Yes, you must make sure your bike is in good repair and has been recently serviced by a qualified bike shop.  It’s vital to check all systems; brakes, shifters, drive train, cables, tires, wheels, fork and rear shock.  If you need to ship your bike contact us for instructions.

WHERE DO WE LEAVE OUR CAR?  We meet the group at 7am at the Lexington Hotel @ 850 Bluff Street, St. George, UT.    This is where you can leave your car parked during the trip.

HOW LONG IS THE SHUTTLE TO THE TRAILHEAD?  About 2½ hours.
